My High Tower was inspired as I read from Psalm 18 on Dec. 18, in the aftermath o the tragic World Trade Center attacks in 2001. It is an opportunity to declare God our deliverer, our rock, our strength and our high tower.

Story behind the song
My father had encouraged my sister and I to write songs as children, but I never could. Then, on Dec. 18, 2001, the second anniversary of his death, notes came drifting into my mind as I was reading from Psalm 18.
I realized as I read that David's troubles paralleled our own as our nation grappled with the tragic Twin Tower attacks. So I penned the song the best I could.
The song was completed two years later at the time of Saddam Hussein's capture. Choral parts were added, making My High Tower both my first song and my first choral piece.
God sent the soprano, Lisa Watson, to me at the public library. Both of us had taken our children to Storytime. I met her across the table from me as she was studying ... her church's sheet music.
Lyrics
My High Tower (from Psalm 18)
Verse 1
I will love you Lord, you are my strength,
I will call on the Lord, so I shall be saved,
The Lord is my deliverer,
my rock, my strength,
He is my high tower.
REFRAIN
The sorrows of death surrounded me,
The sorrows of hell were all around me,
so I called the Lord and he heard my voice,
Then the Earth shook and trembled,
darkness was under his feet.
Verse 2
He made darkness his secret place,
he sent out his arrows and shot out lightnings,
He thundered in the heavens,
God will light my darkness,
his way is perfect.
REFRAIN
Verse 3
You strengthened me for the battle,
You gave me the necks of my enemies,
that I might destroy them,
It’s God who avenges,
He teaches my hands to war.
