Weird little song about parenthood.
The LYL Band plays original and traditional material.
Since the late 70s Dave Moore and Frank Hudson have performed as The LYL Band in and around Minneapolis MN.
Story behind the song
I'm hoping for a double meaning or more in the title. My two year old is of course all about independence and dependency all mixed together. And with the mix of spring and fall in the song, I'm thinking that as Dave once sang, our kids will "dance upon our graves".
Lyrics
Spring. Our doors opened to whatever we believe.
My son runs among the leftover brown and gray leaves.
With some slight deliberation he selects a leaf in each hand
Holds them out and lets them fall twittering to land.
This he does again and again, each with laughter,
Bent on recreating a fall he cannot remember.
Then I must show him clouds in the sky and ask him
Do they know where they are going, any twisting arm
Of them, moving, as they rub and run, and squirm from the west.
For a moment my child and I are still, and we are at rest.
I ask, what of everything will change forbid or allow?
A wind comes up from the ground where we lay
Picks up every leaf and they Move! as if to say:
“There is another world, and we’re going there now!”
