I originally started recording myself play to track my progress and work on playing songs I had learned all the way through, like in live performances. The songs here are a few of the ones I like to play - some I have written, some by other people.

Story behind the song
I originally got this idea when I found out that my girlfriend would have internet access where she would be working in India. We were planning to use the internet to communicate, so I thought maybe I would put up pictures or video clips so she could view them without having them clog up her email inbox, taking forever to load. Then I thought, why don't I write a song for her, video tape it, and then put the video up? (see it @ http://www.myspace.com/joshua_blum) This is the audio. In regards to the lyrics, I was trying to capture the feelings of longing you have missing someone you care about, no matter where they might be. In the third verse, I was talking about the world at large, which is never so large as we might think.

Whistle: C—Em—C—Am—C—Am—G …
C Am
Oceans divide,
F G
Countries and borders and mountains, too.
C Am
If you are so far,
F G
Why can I still feel you in my arms?
Am Em
There’s a ship on the water, floating along,
Am Em G
Looking for a port to be safe from the storm …
C
When I reach out my hand,
Am
A part of me goes with you.
C
Starlight and starbright,
Am
Make a wish on clear skies tonight.
F G C Am
For peace, for freedom, safe journeys, too.
F G C
For love, and other things.
C Am
Our world … can be so large.
F G
Different lands, different people, different tongues.
C Am
So … we disagree,
F G
And strike our brothers in anger and fright.
Am Em Am Em
What’s wrong? What’s right? Does it matter in the end?
Am Em G
Can we lay down our arms and reach out instead?
C
When I reach out my hand,
Am
A part of me goes with you.
C
Starlight and starbright,
Am
Make a wish on clear skies tonight.
F G C Am
For peace, for freedom, safe journeys, too.
F G C
For love, and other things.
F Am G
When I see you in my dreams,
F Am G
You seem almost real to me.
F Am
But prayers be sure, on some foreign shore,
F G
Our ship has found a port.
