Story behind the song
It's not about an actual guy, but it is inspired by a number of guys I've known who have had to live with the consequences of some grave lapse of judgement in their past.

Loser in the Basement Suite
©Sean Holland 2003
That limping guy that we see on our block
Five years he shuffles by and never talks
He?s invisible; that?s plain to see.
Five years ago some kiddies came ?round to play
Angry Momma waited in the car all day
She was critical, or so it seemed to me.
He is the loser in the basement suite
Neighbours smell his cigarettes
They smell the food he eats
I guess the landlord knows the loser?s name
It doesn?t matter much
These guys are all the same
Some days he goes to work and sometimes no.
That heavy toolbox makes him walk real slow.
But he?s punctual; he takes the bus, you see.
Five years the guy has never had any wheels
It makes you wonder how the helpless feel
Mobility: it means the world to me.
He is the loser in the basement suite
Neighbours smell his cigarettes
They smell the food he eats
I guess the landlord knows the loser?s name
It doesn?t matter much
These guys are all the same
The other day I saw him with a chick
He was leaning on her like a walking stick
It?s beautiful to see romance in spring
I think she?s moved into the basement suite now
I hear them screaming when the sun goes down
I guess it?s mutual, and that?s the important thing
He is the loser in the basement suite
The neighbours smell his cigarettes
They smell the food he eats
I guess his lover knows the loser?s name
It doesn?t matter much
These losers are all the same
They are the boozers in the basement suite
Maybe some day they?re going to get back on their feet
Though no one has a clue just who they are
Sometimes I nod at them when I drive by in my car.
