Story behind the song
Tennessee made Jack Daniels Whiskey is lovingly called old Number 7. I wanted to write a song for all the bootleggers and moonshiners around here, so I invented old Number 9
Lyrics
He's addicted, he's addicted, he's addicted to old number nine the more that he drinks the less that he thinks And it always leaves him feeling mighty fine. When he starts singing Dixie he starts drinking whiskey and it's always that homemade number nine It eases his pain and it's cheaper than cocaine That good old southern bootleg number nine He pulls a plug from a big brown jug Tilts it back and takes a chug Coughs and spits and shakes his head Both eyes twitch and his nose turns red Sometimes he gets awful mean and takes a monkey wrench to the washing machine If you want to have a big old time You better get some number nine His old lady knows that whenever he goes To that bar down on dog holler creek He'll spend all their money come home acting funny so liquored up that he can't hardly speak He loves power tools singing songs and shooting pool And he likes a taste of good blackberry wine But if you really want to know what makes him git on up and go It's that rotgut homemade whiskey number nine Chorus
