Story behind the song

A sad song about feeling as though your efforts in life have been wasted, and you should never have tried in the first place. This of course applies to several things, but as the song is about a personal experience, it generally has to do with a girl.
I was motivated most by a relatively bad experience I had with a girl. In short; I liked her, she liked me back, and told me to keep trying to get to know her, and then randomly decided to tell me that suddenly she liked me and another guy, and then she chose the other guy. How nice of her.
In the end I discovered she wasn't really my type after all, and I fell in love with her best friend, who is my type...
