Story behind the song
I started out wanting to write this for all the service women out there doing their part protecting our great country, then after I finished the lyric and started reading back through it, a lot of it reminded me of my wifes parents. So that's my story and it looks like a jump ball from here. Go listen to it; think you'll enjoy it.
Lyrics
Yellow Rose ©2004 James Odle, Jr. / Brian Wimberly Uncle Sam came calling when the winter's snows were falling he kissed his girl good-bye held her tight and said, "Don't you cry". brushed a tear from her cheek gave her his promise to keep married her on New Years Eve nineteen-forty-three A few days later from a foreign land A package came with a note in a strong hand Hold this yellow rose Close to your heart Pretend that we're together Instead of so far apart I'll see your sweet face In the morning dew Hold tight to this yellow rose And remember, I Love You Ev'ry month it arrived one prayer longer that he survived then nine months came so fast and one life began as one passed her Mom saw the mailman recognized the telegram the baby was on the way Dear Lord why today A few days later from a foreign land A package came with a note in a strong hand (repeat chorus) Slowly hurt fades away families grow, auburn hair turns gray daughters have grand daughters who grow strong and march off to war She'd heard grandma's stories Now she's saying, "Don't worry". a yellow ribbon in her hair and grandma's prayer A few days later from a foreign land A package came with a note in a strong hand
