Story behind the song
well this track is a result of some post production work i did on an hour long studio improvisation between devin on electric guitar and me on supercollider. devin was placed in the tile echo chamber next to my studio with a hollowbody electric guitar, an amp, and a tube distortion pedal. feedback was sculpted between the guitar and amp in the extremely resonant tile chamber, and the whole situation was picked up from a condenser mic in the corner of the room. i altered the incomming signal by a large array of realtime particle synthesis and fourier analysis processes and spat the stuff back into the echo chamber through another amp, resulting in more feedback. the hour long improvisation was then edited minimally, mostly by removing some material, and we defined the 4:30 or so segment we called 'the single'. AND HERE'S THE GEEKIEST PART: i stumbled across a wonderful new type of destructive distortion by substituting wavesets with trainlets that have been convolved with the original signal's spectrum. a waveset is defined by Trevor Wishart as the region within every three zero crossings. many composers use wavelet substitution as a form of destructive distortion, substituting each wavelet with a given oscillator shape, like sawtooth, square, sine, triangle, etc. i have yet to be aware of wavelet substitution occuring with convolved trainlets. perhaps Wishart's software does this, but it's expensive as all hell, so screw it. the computation is really easy on the processor, i used maybe %7 of the total cpu for this patch, which also involved some dynamics processing. ridiculous. the distortion doesn't come in right at the begining, but listen for it, because it's totally monstrous.
