Story behind the song
When I first wrote Bus Ride, it started out as a rude joke aimed at myself, while I was on my daily (45 min. each way) bus ride to school, so not much of a stretch, but the name worked. I was sitting there, thinking about my little piano phrase that I'd come up with for a weekly assignment, then as I sort of stared off, I could just hear the whole piece. I wanted to see just how different the music I was putting to paper would be in comparison to what I heard in my head. I showed it to my music theory teacher in her office, and she sight-read the first page of it on her piano. I started to shake, uncontrollably, which kind of makes me laugh now, but at the time it was quite an adrenaline rush. The sounds coming from her piano were EXACTLY as I had heard it all in my head - the right melodies, the right chords, but most importantly, the right FEEL and EMOTION. This raised many questions for me, because, though I had been playing music constantly for many, many years, I viewed that kind of relationship with music as something that other people had, something entirely elusive, and I assumed that it was something that one is born with. Well, my personal opinions on this matter, and many things have since changed, they had to, as my experiences were demanding. Once the entire piece was finished, it was placed in a stack with all of the other "creative projects" that were submitted for the year. The end result is this recording, which features the same professor sight-reading the entire song (in front of a class). In my opinion, her performance was not only very accurate, but it conveyed the exact emotions I was hoping for.
