Story behind the song
Okay my birthday is this month and of course you begin to reminisce… Now be prepared to roll your eyes as I take you back into the 80’s. This is classic electro pop. Of course it has my mark on it just the same. Give it a listen and see what you think… I was surfing on Ebay earlier in the day and was looking at all the old instruments of my past. The Roland Juno 6, the Juno 600, the Jupiter 8. The Yamaha DX7, the birth of the sampling synthesizers like the 8-bit Ensoniq Mirage and all those wonderful drum machines. I had my share of dreams about owning and programming a Linn drum or a Roland TR-808. I owned an E-mu Drumulator (pre-midi) but my favorite was the Sequential Circuits Drum Trak and Tom computers. Many of those vinitage machines have been updated into software synths and some of the actual machines still sell for a pretty penny. I remember the 80’s fondly and I have a massive collection of 80’s artists like the Motels and Ultravox, Gary Numan and many others that bring back memories good and bad. Now that I’m going to be 46 and 50 doesn’t seem so far away it seems like those memories are so far away – when really it’s just a matter of digging up the right tune – closing my eyes and it all comes back to me in an instant. There is a local radio station that specializes in 80’s on the weekend and there is hardly a weekend trip that isn’t spent without listening for a while – just to see what they might dig up. It’s amazing to me how many people fondly remember or rediscover the music of the 70’s and 80’s and start talking about where they were or what they were doing when that song came out. It never fails to involve a gentle shaking of the head as they realize how time has flown by as we count the years. I remember when Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass” came out. We were still listening to 45’s on the jukebox and the Teen Center downtown had just opened. Air Hockey was a big hit and I was learning to play pool. I was a sophomore in high school and it was 1976. I fell in love with the new wave sound and the rest is history. In the early eighties I was buying vinyl lp’s and reading articles in American Scientific about lasers and how they would revolutionize the music and movie industry. I was diving into cut out bins and buying anything that promised synthesizer programming. I listen to anything I could get. I was buying albums for $1.99 and $2.99 and reading the fine print and credits on the back to see what they played. I had a ton of records and often recorded them right away on to cassette to listen to in my car. Now it’s compact discs and mp3’s – mini disks and ipods – but it’s still the same – isn’t it? The picture is from an article about the CMI Fairlight. It was more computer than synthesizer and it was practically a studio in itself. It also cost about as much as a studio too.
