Story behind the song
Those of us who've headed off to college may remember those long first few months away from home and family (even if we were very happy to be away and "on our own").
Lyrics
G C G Wednesday night, tomorrow’s Thanksgiving. C Am D I’m gonna have to drive straight through. G C G I can’t wait for Mom’s turkey stuffing C D G And I can’t wait to be with you. College life’s not what I expected, Though things are going pretty well. Daddy claims I’m getting’ educated. That’s something only time will tell. F G Em Refrain I’ll be home in time for dinner, Debbie. Am C D Don’t tell Dad what I’m gonna do. G C G I can’t wait for Thanksgiving dinner. C D G Tomorrow I’ll be home with you. Can’t talk long, I’ve just got three minutes And I don’t have another dime. My gas tank’s full & I better get to it. If I hope to get home in time. No, don’t wake Mom, she’s probably exhausted She’s cooked and cleaned for three days straight. Did David, Tim, and Gary get home yet? You know I’ll try not to be late. Refrain It’s been three months since I left for Lansing. It sometimes seems more like a year. I better go. I’ve got ten hours of driving Between Thanksgiving dinner and here. When Mom wakes up, you can tell her I miss her. Can’t wait to see my brothers, too. But most of all I miss my little sister. And I can’t wait to be with you. Refrain Refrain … Tomorrow I’ll be home (3x) with you. Unpublished Work © 1992 John R. Whitney
