Story behind the song
The inspiration is obvious and the upbeat style is intentional. The lyrics of "Those Old Saints" were actually published in my employer's October 2005 newsletter: http://www.ny.nrcs.usda.gov/news/.
Lyrics
Those Old Saints In Memory of the Victims and Survivors of “Katrina” – August 29, 2005 Those old Saints, had to learn to swim When the levees broke and let the water in And the mighty storm washed across the ground They had to learn to swim or they would have drowned. Chorus Those old Saints, are gonna march again After the hurricane and her mighty winds And waves and floods tore their world apart They’re gonna march again, they’ll make a brand new start. Those old Saints, had to learn to fly ‘Cause the roofs were hot, and the waters high And fouled with trash and oil and flooded sewers. They had to learn to fly or they’d have died for sure. Chorus Those old Saints, still know how to pray They still know how to pray for a brighter day. And they hold out hope, for love and strength and grace That their reborn world will be a better place. Those old Saints, are gonna march again After the hurricane and her mighty winds And waves and floods tore their world apart We’re gonna march again, we’ll make a brand new start.
