There’s an old saying when you reach the top you are now the hunted, and no where in recent political memory has the tides changes so dramatically, as the (5) weeks the Democrats have become drunk with power. It’s like your kid brother trying Boonesfarm his first time.
Their called Earmarks, extra legislation shameless snuck into the Appendix of a Bill, many time having nothing to do with the original Item
For instance, from Defense Department Spending Bills, there’s the Ernest & Julio Gallo research on the effects of wine on the brain; the appropriations for telescopes tracking aliens; and an initiative to study water-free urinals. All obviously Defense Related.
It doesn’t end there: 1.7M for research on the Shiitake Mushroom; 300K to map the DNA of catfish; a cool Mil to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame; and I kid you not, a 35,000 dollar earmark to fight infiltrators with a Kentucky Bingo Hall.
But the coup de grace of all earmarks was stud-muffin Dennis Hasterts circle jerk of the century. August 2002 Hastert buys more than 300 acres of rural tundra in his homestate of Illinois, with nary of life in site. All the while the Highway Transportation Bill is set to expire, priming all but the illiterate a chance run new highways through YourTown USA. Fast forward to 2005 and an explosion of earmarks filling a pork barrel faster than a sick hog.
One of the highways built? The Prairie Parkway, a corridor which runs RIGHt THROUGH Hasterts 300 acres, now ballooning well beyond his initial investment. And not one illegal thing done. Immoral, but not illegal.
BUT, this week, President Bush addressed earmarks in his radio address:
