Pheonix Rising consisted of singer-songwriter of Portland, Oregon and Australian blues guitarist/vocalist . They collaborated solely via the Internet and released four songs over the course of about a year, the first of which climbed the Soundclick.com pop/rock charts rapidly. "Don't Let Go" became there on New Year's Day, 2007 and continues to be popular even today. Story behind the song
This song was the final deciding factor in our band name. For weeks now we had searched for an appropriate band name. We both liked the idea of the pheonix due to its link with rebirth, and were pairing many different words with "pheonix" to try and get the right mix. When I tried "Requiem" I knew that wasn't our band name... but it stirred something inside me all the same. A requiem is a funeral song... but if you had a requiem for a pheonix it would not be so sad. When a pheonix dies, a new bird is born from the ashes. Thus the old passes to make way for the new. I was so moved that I wrote the first chorus on my way home from work, and had a finished song not much afterward. After reading the words "Like a pheonix rising from the ashes" Ian and I both knew that there was no more fighting it -- Pheonix Rising was the right name for us.
Lyrics
Through the fire and the fury I have fought my way to you And it is here I leave my ransom As I bid my past adieu No more waiting, no more watching Wond'ring how this all will end Like a phoenix rising from the ashes I will live to fight again. My soul is weak and weary From wandering the earth O'er the years that I have traveled Since the moment of my birth Some may say that I am young still They don't know the pain inside Heavy burdens on my shoulders As onward now I ride... And promises are fleeting In this world of flesh and stone But the spirit forges onward Though dust is all that's left of bone Here in this confusion I will make my final stand Like a phoenix rising from the ashes Flying to the promised land. My heart's been so often shattered Where it's mended there are cracks But I'm always looking forward For there's no use looking back Through the sunlight and the shadows Through the laughter and the tears Still time marches ever forward Through the unrelenting years... Some memories are tender But my hope is sweeter still Through all my earthly struggles That my dreams may be fulfilled At the moment of my downfall When all is looking grim Like a phoenix rising from the ashes We will learn to love again. And though the years weigh heavy upon me Destiny echoes softly in my mind Unfettered by the chains that surround me Unbound by the constraints of space and time These broken wings will burn away Tomorrow is another day And from these flames my newfound strength will rise Yeah Through the fire and the fury I have fought my way to you And it is here I leave my ransom As I bid my past adieu No more waiting, no more watching Wond'ring how this all will end Like a phoenix rising from the ashes I will live to fight again.
