Try to imagine this along the lines of Paul Simon's Graceland...if I had an African ensemble, they'd be singing and drumming on this one. And, yes, what that means is that I'll be heading to Africa to record this eventually. Yippee!

This is Lorelei Loveridge's 'demo' page. It is dedicated to friend and co-writer Elizabeth Ward who passed away on Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 in the morning, her loved ones with her, her daughter holding her hand, and strangers from across the globe holding them all in a circular embrace of love and compassion. Every effort will be made, as promised to Liz before she passed on, to record her music and share it with the world. Peace be upon her and upon us all. Story behind the song
Written for a South African friend who shared with me her story -- that of her and her husband and family. In South Africa, Mozambique, and elsewhere, 'white' farmers are having their farms taken from them by governments who now hand these establishments over to 'black' farmers, many of whom have no or little experience with running such farms. The damage is extensive on many fronts. The 'white' farmers are left with nothing, and in the case of this friend -- it comes late in life (50's and 60's) to be starting over. The 'black' farmers, in many cases, fail with the farms, and this leads to that endless cycle of famine and the need for international aid. The things about Africa that I did not know until moving to Saudi Arabia and meeting an array of South Africans. One other thing to note about this song...I rarely insert references to 'God' into my music. However, my friend had made mention of her relationship to God throughout all this, and the need/desire to live well, knowing that soon she'll be living in that other life, that afterlife. It was moving. Very.

When They Take Your Land © 2006, Lorelei Loveridge, SOCAN When they take your land When they take your home When they take all you've worked For thirty years for When they take all of the crops And the lambs from the paddocks Sacrifice your dreams With the slaughter God is watching God is listening God is holding you now When they call you a color Revive that old sin Send you on your way Across an ocean And when the phone rings And you talk to your honey Send all the money And cry alone at night God is watching God is listening God is holding you now Let go, let it all go You can’t take it anyway Let go, let it all go Let your spirit take to the highway Wherever you go, there’ll be love Wherever you go, you’ll find a friend Wherever you go, you’ll plant those roots And you’ll grow again (South African rhythm/singing solo) So, when they take your land When they take your home When they take all you’ve worked For thirty years for When they take all of the crops And the lambs from the paddocks Sacrifice your dreams With the slaughter God is watching God is listening God is holding you now
