Pheonix Rising consisted of singer-songwriter of Portland, Oregon and Australian blues guitarist/vocalist . They collaborated solely via the Internet and released four songs over the course of about a year, the first of which climbed the Soundclick.com pop/rock charts rapidly. "Don't Let Go" became there on New Year's Day, 2007 and continues to be popular even today. Story behind the song
While this song functions well as a fairly standard, if desperate, love song, it harbors a deeper meaning as well. It was originally written to be the theme for a forthcoming short film entitled 'She Died For Him," which is due to be released in early 2007, and inspired by part of its story. Spoiler Alert! If you don't want to wait for the film, here's the meaning explained: A young married couple is struggling because the husband is dying and needs a heart transplant immediately to survive. The wife, who is desperately in love with her husband, knows that her heart is a match for her husband's and could replace it. She decides to sacrifice her own life in order to save his. This song is sung from her point of view and could be viewed as a goodbye letter -- her final words explaining her feelings and actions before she commits suicide. Ultimately, she feels that, because her heart will live on within his body, it is the only way they can stay together.
Lyrics
O my love Don't go away We've got to be together Until my dying day (2x) In this moment fleeting The world disappears I feel your heart beating Dispelling all my fears Stay here with me Don't leave my side This is my only plea I'll always be your bride As this day is ending The sun sets on my tears My truth I will be sending Through all the endless years Love will be the answer To the question in your soul The tireless, bright dancer That makes your body whole Take my heart It belonged to you From the start I guess I always knew that I would be Safe in your arms Darlin', can't you see? Far from all harm I'm forever free Don't let go Don't let go Don't let go (2x) O my love Don't go away We've got to be together Until my dying day (2x)
