Story behind the song
Bennie Swallowed the Nail is a phonetic way of saying "Praise the Lord" in Haitian Creole... The idea is that the weekend missionary doesn't know this and then is told by his interpreter.... I visited Haiti in 1986 as a senior in high school. We were told we were going to spread the gospel, plus medical supplies. What we found was people who knew God and His Son, and were much better at praising Him than we were... To them, faith was a given, to us, faith was a struggle...... On a side note... we left Haiti two days before they closed the airport because of the ensuing civil war...
