Lyrics
Texas Summer
© 2003 – G. Smith / G. Wilson / D. Wilson
-----------------------------------------
Verse 1 -
The air stood still, as the train whistle blew,
Another hot Texas day was through.
I stayed in the fields with the coming night,
The breeze so cool and the stars so bright.
The moon was full in the evening sky,
With a promise of tomorrow standing by.
Chorus -
Texas summer, seventy-three;
That's when everything changed for me .
What was a future with well laid plans,
Turned day-to-day and what I’d hold in my hands.
Tomorrow was something not meant to be,
That Texas summer of seventy-three.
Verse 2 -
He was my oldest brother, just nineteen;
Fresh out of boot and still kinda green,
Twelve went out on patrol that day;
Nine came back, and no-one could say,
How he and the other two disappeared.
Now all we had was hope and fear ---
Chorus -
Texas summer, seventy-three;
That's when everything changed for me.
What was a future with well laid plans,
Turned day-to-day and what I’d hold in my hands.
Tomorrow was something not meant to be,
That Texas summer of seventy-three.
Bridge -
“My Country ‘Tis of Thee,
Sweet land of liberty” ---
How could you take him away from me,
So far away across the sea?
Chorus 2 (Verse 3 ?) -
Texas summer, 2004;
Things’re still like they were before;
Except it’s cold now in July,
And some nights I’ll hear Mama cry;
I’m still hopin’ he’ll come home to me,
From that long ago summer of seventy-three.
REPEAT Chorus -
Oh, Texas summer, seventy-three;
That's when everything changed for me.
What was a future with well laid plans,
Turned day-to-day and what I’d hold in my hands.
Tomorrow was something not meant to be,
That Texas summer of seventy-three.
Tomorrow was something not meant to be,
That Texas summer of seventy-three.
