Story behind the song
A CHANGE OF HEART For the past 100 years or so humanity has effectuated a real change in nature through pollution. In the beginning of the 20th century we discovered the bomb and tested thousands of them in the desserts and oceans. We further discovered the atom and hydrogen bombs (think of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and added even more dangerous chemicals to the air, water and land on the planet. The industrialization of the Western world also brought about the appearance of humongous chimney stacks spewing absolutely dangerous chemicals into the air. And we also had the disasterous oil spills over the oceans. All of this has impacted on our environment in a negative way. The results are just now starting to appear. For example, in 2004 many people died in Europe because of a heat wave. In 2005 we had the unprecedented number of hurricanes in America and the disasterous Tzunami in Indonesia.. And there are many other “natural” calamities to speak of throughout the planet, including the melting of parts of Greenland and Antarctica. In June of 2006 I saw Al Gore’s film entitled, “An Inconvenient Truth”. It was all about global warming and how humankind is impacting on the planet with its careless use of resources. Upon exiting the cinema, I felt I had to contribute in some way to make people aware of the real problems facing humanity in the next 40 to 50 years. This song is a result of seeing Al Gore's film. The distorted guitar in this song is, admittedly, weird. It pans from left to right, right to left, and at times the reverb is overwhelming. But all of this is intentional. The lyrics in this song concern natural disasters, so i wanted to somehow put an accent or emphasize on this fact by exaggerating the distorted guitar. For example, at a certain point the lyrics say that "the earth is pained and tipping on its side". The distorted guitar puts emphasis on this by panning from the left to the right on your stereo speakers. Fact is, though, that I almost deleted the weird things happening with the distorted guitar on the suggestion by a friend. But in the end I decided to leave it as originally intended. The lyrics here are what I call "heavy duty". And justifiably so in light of what we humans are doing to Mother Nature on this planet. The conclusion in this song is nothing but the truth. If you are at all concerned with our planetary condition, with helping make people aware and fighting for the good cause, I hope you will use this song to best advantage. And if you are a musician, my hope is that you will follow suit and also compose songs which encourage people to take a stand against the large, corporate polluters who care very little about our future and our children's future.
Lyrics
A Change of Heart (Words & Music by James Richards - July 2006) Well I woke up early this morning And turned the TV on There was bombing in Baghdad A war between Israel and Lebanon In Indonesia a Tzunami kills millions And in India the monsoons do the same Hurricanes ruin New Orleans Louisianna is battered and maimed Thousands die in a heat wave in Europe While glaciers melt in Greenland Scientists call it “global warming” Some say it’s a curse from a Divine hand Eskimos have started panicking The northern ice is melting fast Polar bears are going hungry It’s the end of their world at last Business worldwide don’t believe in facts They say the earth is doing just fine A million acres of forest dies in Canada It’s an isolated incident, they say – one of a kind China’s population grows like a speeding bullit The Chinese don’t seem to mind Asians are building more factories that pollute Cause they don’t wanna be left behind Entire African cities are plagued with AIDS Millions of people are suffering – they die Nobody seems to care enough to help We don’t want to know the reason why It’s the end of the world, this can’t be denied Planet earth is pained and tipping on its side Passively we watch as Mother Nature dies But soon there’ll be no other place to hide What we need on this planet now Is not denial served on a silver plate We need a change of heart To rid this world of greed and hate What we need on this planet now Is not denial served on a silver plate We need a change of heart To rid this world of greed and hate
