Story behind the song
Gonna Keep on Loving You I first heard this tune on a 1970's live B.B. King album recorded at the Palace (if I remember correctly) in Chicago. I think it was the only tune with B.B. King's signature (the album also had Night Life, and Don't Answer the Door on it). Anyway, "Gonna Keep on Loving You" was my favorite tune on this album. What I loved about the tune was the bass lines playing with the definitive beat of the drums. Bass guitar and drums were absolutely playing together with a sort of spiritual/blues feel. One felt as if he were on a plantation doing all that gruelling work in the cotton fields. While the bass and drums kept a delicious beat, BB played notes against and in between the beat. And his guitar was really "crying". (This is a tune that really defines "cool"). By the way, when listening to this tune be sure to play it in stereo and very loud. Crank those speakers up, sit back and close your eyes. I guarantee you'll be tapping your foot in seconds! (You might even feel like going out and working in the veggie patch! :-) In this tune I loved BB's opening lines (16 bars) -- which, by the way, I remember distinctively and which I play note per note as BB played them. For many years these opening lines stuck to my head and I could never get rid of them. The rest of the lines are improvised with the attempt at sounding as if it's BB who's playing. What is strange is that I have never ever seen this tune on any of B.B. King's many other albums, be they studio recordings, live performances or anthologies or anything. It strikes me as funny that BB would not make this a staple in his repertoire since it's one of his best tunes (in my opinion). Anyway, I gave away that vinyl album many many years ago and had to go by memory to reproduce the tune for this blues CD. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. As far as the lyrics go, BB only wrote the first two verses. I wrote the remaining verses because I wanted to stretch and savour the tune completely (it's 6 minutes and 7 seconds long). I hope you will listen to the tune half a dozen times so that you will get a good feel for it. Once you've done this, it'll become one of your favorites, I'm sure.
