Story behind the song
Like most of Jimmy Reed's tunes, "Honest I Do" is short and sweet. What makes the tune distinctive in identity, in my opinion, is the repetition of the arpeggio fill in. Whoever it was that thought of adding this little fill in was a genius! Traditionally blues was a call-and-response type of music where the guitarist/singer would blurt out a few lines and ask the audience to respond. The arpeggio fill in on this tune respects such traditions and goes a long way in making the tune a memorable favorite. Jimmy Reed tunes are perfectly suitable to me because I have somewhat of a similar high voice as Jimmy did. I hestitated playing the harmonica on this tune out of respect for Reed -- nobody plays blues harp on Reed's tunes like he did! And, anyway, I'm a guitarist. So, here I'm playing Reed's harmonica lines on my guitar. Mind you, none of the lines are exactly as Jimmy would play them on his harp. I'm improvising for the most part.
