Rock instrumental that builds up like the tide coming in. As a youth I used to get high on Sugarloaf Beach in Portishead, hence the double-meaning in the title.

Hi, I've been writing songs since I was twelve years old, and recording them since 1985. Roger Cook (of the Cook-Greenaway-Cook songwriting partnership and Blue Mink, etc) once wrote that I have the ability to write a hit single and that he was waiting for one from me. He also said I need to 'lighten up a bit', unquote. F*ck that!

Story behind the song
Rob and myself have been jamming this on our acoustic guitars for nearly a year. After a few months we jammed here instead of at his place, and I laid down the backing with Rob looking over the proceedings. It just kind of grew from there, until it ended up with twin electric guitar breaks after starting very quietly. I told Rob he had to claim his piece of music back from me after the climax by doing an acoustic guitar break on the outro. Nice job, Rob! Tasteful and understated: just what the tune needed! We called it 'Sugarloaf High' because there's a beach called Sugarloaf here in Portishead, and the tune is like the tide coming in. Also, even though we're a decade apart in age, both Rob and myself used to go there in our teens to smoke Holy Herb. The pic was specially taken at Sugarloaf Beach to use here, btw. :-)
