Story behind the song
I was teaching a class on Edgar Allan Poe, and was inspired by the rhyming structure and themes of the poem "Ulalume". The intro part called to mind images of moonlight, and I wrote it in October.
Lyrics
One night wandering watching the moonlight Weeping wordlessly wiping his tears Wondering why his poor wife was with God now Wolves wait while their victim appears Whoa, October moon Whoa, he'll be there soon Hearing howling he stops heartbeat pounding Has a horrific thought in his head Hopes that Heaven is where he is headed He'll see Helen again if he's dead Whoa, October moon Whoa, he'll be there soon When Diana rides high in the sky Filled with thoughts and he's wondering why Why he's wandering out through the woods all alone Wondering why he howls at the moon Wakes with injuries wondering how he Wasn't wandering death's woeful halls When weeks pass wearing wolf fur he walks to Where wolves wait when Diana she calls Whoa, October Moon Whoa, he'll be there soon Fiercely fighting lycanthropic cravings Facing facts he submits and he feeds Fearsome fangs feel like knives in his mouth he feasts on flesh to fulfill his dark needs Whoa, October moon Whoa, he'll be there soon When Diana rides high in the sky Filled with thoughts and he's wondering why Why he's wandering out through the woods all alone Wondering why he howls at the moon He just goes on driven by the moon Hoping the madness will end sometime soon Nothing can save him but silver it seems He'll live forever still haunted by dreams Haunted by dreams, death is his dream October Moon Oh, he'll be there soon
