A lament of lost innocence.
Solo recordings of my own compositions. Sometimes used as a trial balloon before bringing songs to my band. I share recordings with my friends here.
I was first interested in guitar when I heard Hound Dog by Elvis. Then The Beatles and Bob Dylan pretty much sealed the deal.
I wasn't blessed with the knack of picking up parts off of records so I resorted to songwriting to minimize my weaknesses.
That didn't help my singing, but I am working on it.
Story behind the song
I have heard the complaint, "we were supposed to have flying cars by now" from a few people. I remember as a kid seeing cartoons of the future with big white buildings and everything being really clean. I just ran with that and the song wrote itself.
Lyrics
1. When I was young the future was supposed to be rosy and bright,
Atomic Age utopia, monolithic buildings so pretty and white,
Progress was our friend, never going to end,
Sure like to feel that way again.
(Chorus)Earthbound, where are the flying cars,
Earthbound, where’s my vacation on Mars,
Earthbound, nothing but 911, global warming, Iraq,
Earthbound, I want my innocence back
2. No one thought we’d ever need , a war machine,
No hunger, no poverty, no Soylent Green,
Man! That seems like a joke, I guess I just woke,
up from an idealistic dream.
(Bridge)
There’s so much we don’t know, where we’re going we don’t need roads,
No matter what they do, it all comes back to you.
3. There’s a new one waiting in the wings,
We’ll try but we can’t teach them everything,
And when they look back to, everything they tried to do,
Will they feel the same sting?
