It's Been a Long Time - SSG4 Week 42
Submission for guitarnoise.com's Sunday Songwriters Group, year 4, week 42. The theme: 'Letter to a long lost friend'
Hey, thanks for stopping by. I'm just a guy who likes writing songs, and this is a place for me to put the songs I write for others to critique.
Story behind the song
A composite of several relationships mangled by the hands of revisionism.
Lyrics
It's been a while since I stopped time just to come around
It's been long, I could have called a hundred times by now
Could write a letter, but it could never look in your eyes to see
Were we lovers, sister-brother, or somewhere in between?
It's been a while since you and I strolled aimless country miles
Quiet lanes, and sunny days, and walking side by side
And they're calling, overgrown, and lonely for the sound
Of two hearts beating, two mouths singing, two kids being, dancing holy ground
How long since you flew into my arms like rushing tide
Let your warm tears kiss my neck and pour your ocean dry
Pull me under, tear me from, and drag me out to sea
Rearrange, the joyful way, you made me less of me
I stand for hours out in the storm
Drenched and five feet from your door
I'll make it to the doorbell yet
Or eat my weight in raw regrets
Breach your picket fence at last
Clear my throat and try to ask
Will you leave cold war behind
And brave the rain and come outside with me?
You're standing there, but will I dare look in your eyes to see
Were we lovers, sister-brother, something other, somewhere in between?
It's been a long time
