Story behind the song
The idea for this song came after a conversation I had with one of my friends. During the conversation he mentioned that his dad was dying. Like any somewhat caring person, I asked, " where you close?" and he explained a little of the circumstances. For days after that conversation, I couldn't get the thought of how hard it must be to forgive in that situation though we're called to do just that. My hope for this song would be to encourage anyone who hears it to really seek God's help to forgive those deepest hurts that we have had and if you've wronged someone to seek forgiveness. For it is in our ability to be weak and broken that we will find God's strength made perfect in us.
Lyrics
Break Me By Lonnie Crampsey I can still see the pain in his eyes Just a longing for the dad he never knew “He went shortly after I turned 5 And left my Mom and me alone, so alone” “What could he offer after so much time And I’m not really sure I want to let him in These walls might be just too steep to climb Why did he dig up these old bones, I thought were gone” Pre chorus 1 “But in that slightest time our lives did cross, you were never really there And now this anger has been stored for so long? Why should I even care? You never cared” (Chorus) Oh God can you break this heart of stone So that I can live again Oh God, This resentments all I’ve known Help me to forgive this man So I can live again, Break me, Break me “We met with my heart strung on my sleeve All the memories flow like it was yesterday 30 years of these questions haunting me Did I cause my dad to go? Why did he go?” Pre chorus 2 “And I can’t believe that we’re sitting here There’s so much healing work to do And as we talk and cry a peace comes flooding in And I finally know, My dad is home (chorus) Oh God can you break this heart of stone So that I can live again Oh God, This resentments all I’ve known Help me to forgive this man Bridge How many times, should I forgive the wrong that's been done How Many times should I forgive him 70 times, 70 times, 70 times, 7
