Born in Suriname, Ferial Karamat Ali started studying classical music at the age of six. She continued to develop her musical skills in the USA and since 1984 in Holland, where she began her career as a performing artist. On her journey through improvised music she developed a distinct fondness for Brazilian jazz. Currently, Ferial Is performing with her new trio, featuring Glenn Gaddum on bass and Tim Dudek on drums, and with the Brazilian formation Sense Of Samba, featuring vocalist Brancka. Since the year 2000, she has worked as a teacher of Brazilian ensembles at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and is known for conducting a variety of jam sessions and setting up projects like "The Steely Dan Project" [with bassist Theo de Jong] and "The Jaco Pastorius Session".
