Story behind the song
July 2001. I started this song after a close friend of mine had told me about a guy we both had worked with that had taken his own life. My friend had invested so much time in sharing God's love and other things with this guy that I was just really hurting for him. You can't hear a story like this as a Christian and not wonder and question your own life. I spent a year or so working with this guy and I tried to think back to all our conversations and weather I had loved Wayne like I'm called to. It was a real wake up call for me. It's amazing how precious and fragile life is. As believers, we have a huge responsibility and in some cases such a limited time to share our faith.
Lyrics
I Wish I Would Have Known (Wayne's Song) By Lonnie Crampsey I've never known despair at all I've always had a sense of hope beyond the pain What hides behind the shadow of a life gone bad? And is there anyone left to blame? Were there things I could have done? In the slightest time our journeys crossed I wonder if I was a hindrance or help? And did I always walk the talk? But now you are gone and our questions still remain He was so lost But did I hear him crying? He was in pain But did I comfort him? His heart was screaming But did I offer him the love I should have shown? Oh Wayne, I wish I would have known Now we are all left to reflect There's nothing we can do to take this night away Do we contemplate our own mortality And hope we have beyond the grave And you're still gone and all our questions still remain (chorus) (Bridge) All the would've, could've, should'ves, will make you crazy And all the questions that remain are hard to take But If we take the time to reflect on our own journey My hope is by God's grace our lives will change (chorus) There are so many lost But do we hear them crying? There's so much pain But do we comfort them? They're hearts are screaming But do we offer them the Love we're called to show Oh Wayne And anyone out there like you I wish I would have know
