Story behind the song
I was motivated by Opray Winfrey to write this song. One of her shows was about people who were ashamed of things they had done in their past and had very low self-esteem - even after they had changed. She called one young woman to the stage and made her look into her eyes, held her face in her hands, and with tears running down the girls face, she and the girl repeated "that's not who I am today."
Lyrics
Who I Am Today
(c) May 2006, Rebecca Dale Peaden/Dimitri Birioukov
Mama taught us right from wrong
But I took a different path
Accountable to noone
I was going nowhere fast
But when I finally reached the bottom
Drowning in a pool of sins
With nowhere else to look but up
Well that's when I found him
Chorus:
That's not who I am today
That's all I want to say
When that old voice tries sneaking up
Saying I’m not worthy of anyone’s love
I smile cause I've been forgiven
And have a new passion for living
I stand tall with my shoulders squared
Cause that’s not who I am today
There are some folks who know about
Just how far I strayed
And wonder how I've got the nerve
To share the same bench and pray
But he forgave us all at Calvary
And the old me has been replaced
Well I once was a troubled soul
But that's not who I am today
Chorus:
That's not who I am today
That's all I want to say
when that old voice tries sneaking up
Saying I’m not worthy of anyone’s love
I smile cause I've been forgiven
And have a new passion for living
I stand tall with my shoulders squared
Cause that's not who I am today
Outtro:
I smile cause I've been forgiven
And have a new passion for living
I stand tall with my shoulders squared
Cause that's not who I am today
Cause that’s not who I am today
