Progressive death metal
Obsidian was founded in 1998 by Simon (guitar/vocals), Sjaak (guitar/vocals), Glen (bass) and Gert-Jan (drums) - four strong-minded metal-heads from Amsterdam. The talented four-piece made it to the 2001 finals of the Amsterdamse Popprijs in the famous Melkweg venue. In 2002 they appeared in the finals of the renowned Metal Battle. The first demo's of the band received a lot of positive criticism from the worldwide metal underground. During the preliminary round of the Metal Battle the band met drummer Melle Kramer, who was at that time playing in Martyrs Of Darkness, one of the other competing bands. Sjaak and Simon saw a window of opportunity towards further musical development band and invited Melle to an informal jam session. Two weeks later Obsidian had it's self a new drummer. Because of the growing complexity of the band's material their emerged a need for a fitting front man who would take care of all the vocal parts. After a painstaking quest for a suitable candidate the new front man was found in november 2005 in the form of Serge Regoor, former singer of the dutch metal band Amethyst. The changed and renewed line-up made it possible for the band to grow and experiment, trying untrodden paths and new idea's, thus more and more creating a unique style in the vein of bands like Meshuggah, Scarve, Cynic and Opeth. Obsidian perfectly fit's into the new breed of modern math-metal/thrashbands and with the long awaited release of the debut album 'Emerging' the band will put it's mark on the page of contemporary metal!
