Story behind the song
We've all heard of the twenty-minute song. It goes something like this. "Yeah I was just sitting there with my guitar and suddenly this song came out of nowhere and it practically wrote itself in twenty minutes"! Well this song did not fall into that category. In most cases I can write a song in twenty minutes, but without the lyrics. I feel that the lyrics are integral to conveying the songs meaning as much as is the structure and the melody I wrote this song in pretty much the same way, but I couldn't seem to produce lyrics that I thought would properly express the songs sentiment. After working and re-working a few lyrical ideas I put it back to bed. The song slept for about two years, occasionally getting up and sleep walking a bit. Then one afternoon I sat down and wrote the lyrics in about twenty minutes!
Lyrics
GROWN MAN CRY Music and Lyrics Martin Hayden Baby I, was wrong For being away for so long I just couldn't bear the pain Of never seeing you again When I look at you I can see that you're feelin blue For all the time I let go by I can see it in your eye (Chorus) But loneliness Was my friend And all this time, believe me baby I never mean for this to be the end Just give us one more try Nobody ought to ever see A grown man cry Aint nobody ought to ever see A grown man cry Days went by And I kept wondering why Why my feelings hadn't changed I still felt the same Then I thought of you The only love I ever knew But it had been so long since I saw you last So much time had passed (Chorus) And loneliness, was still my friend And all this time, believe me baby I never mean for this to be the end Just give us one more try Nobody ought to ever see A grown man cry Aint nobody ought to ever see A grown man cry Aint nobody baby Nobody ought to ever see A grown man cry
