Hi! I'm Chris Breen, a Lyricist/Songwriter from the UK, co-writing across most popular music genres (pop, pop-rock, dance, indie, rock, ballads, acoustic, jazz, new country and show styles). I tend to concentrate more on the lyric writing nowadays, working with a growing number of up-and-coming songwriters & artists. Recently, I've started writing and co-writing top-lines (melody and lyrics) to producers' backing tracks, sometimes co-writing these with Paul Jeffery (see Paul's SoundClick page as well). I'm always open to work on more projects, so please check out the sample MP3s of some of my more recent work and feel free to get in touch. Have a look at the Lyrico Website too! ()

Story behind the song
Torgeir Bjordal (a Norwegian songwriter and producer) sent me an MP3 of a melody he'd hummed across an acoustic guitar part. He said, "Just come up with something that you could imagine Avril Lavigne singing, something with a bit of angst in it". After a couple of days I started hearing the phrase Independence Day over the first 5 syllables of the chorus and then the idea jumped out at me to write a song about a girl in a physically and mentally abusive relationship, finally making a stand for her independence. I think it's worked well... I love Torgeir's music and this is probably my favourite co-write with him to date.
Lyrics
Verse 1 If you won't let me speak my mind If you don't give some freedom then you'll find I'll be on my way, start life anew What's an independent-minded girl to do? And if you don't grant me leeway here There'll be another civil war, I fear And the flag I'll raise to end your reign Will fly in the face of all your words of pain Won't let you put me down Or knock me round again CHORUS Independence Day Will come my way And I'll be free to be myself Independence Day Will come to stay And you'll be left with no one else There'll be no one else Verse 2 I've sat around and taken blows I've let you beat me. Why? Well Heaven knows Maybe I've been weak for loving you But I'm stronger now; you'll find your hold is through You can't silence me My words will shout the truth CHORUS MIDDLE EIGHT And the man who was king He's left there, oh, without a thing, no one to rule And I loved that fool! CHORUSES TO END (Changed to present tense) Independence Day Has come my way And I am free to be myself Independence Day Has come to stay And you are left with no one else Lyrics Copyright Chris Breen, October 2005 IF YOU ARE AN ARTIST, BAND, MANAGEMENT COMPANY, RECORD COMPANY OR PUBLISHER AND WOULD LIKE TO RECORD (AS A MASTER OR DEMO), RELEASE, LICENSE OR PUBLISH THIS SONG, WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU.
