Memories of being a teenager in grimey old Manchester, 'life in Black and White' indeed...with a bit of sunshine and magic provided by Belle Vue Funfair...and a friend ;-) ....and how it all brings us to Where We Are Today
Homemade tunes from NorthWest England
Home recordings from my little studio in North West UK
Story behind the song
The idea was triggered by the wonderful BBC TV series "Life On Mars", which is mainly set in Manchester, UK, in 1973...filmed on what remains of the streets where I grew up. It took me back to my own memories of that era, and in particular, being a 14 year old in that area on 31st July 1972....well, who ever forgets their first kiss??
Lyrics
Late July, cloudless sky
Tumbleweed garden
You're in my arms and staring at the sky
Summer hedgerow smells so sweet
Pavements melting in the heat
A red balloon goes gently drifting by
Rainy day, drift away
Sunshine dreams aint what they seem
Living life in Black and White back then
Those days are gone, so don't look back
Its only thru rose tinted glass
Look at what you have, not what has gone
Smokes in the park...
Cider after dark
Kisses stolen under moonlit skies
I told you how I feel
It all seemed so unreal
You walked away and left me high and dry
Everybody's having fun but me
Wonder what it takes to be so free
Everybody's having fun but me
Wonder what it takes to be so free...
Diesel and dust
Ruins and rust
an empty house in the shadow of the 'fair
you took me by surprise
led me inside
and kissed me underneath the broken stairs
Northern slum to Western dream
and all the places inbetween
it all adds up to where we are today
Its what we have, not what we lost
Never stop to count the cost
Be happy now with every note you play
Waves on the beach
Wind in the wires
Your hearts on the run from me again
Loves out of reach
The sessions expired
Wonder if we'll end up being friends.....?
