Story behind the song
Yeah, I also play avant garde jazz on piano. This track also uses hand-played beats I overdubbed. The piano itself is a Yamaha concert grand, and while Yamaha typically makes excrutiatingly bright sounding pianos, this one was dark and rich, almost like a Steinway but much, much clearer on the low end. It had just been tuned and the recording technitian was a genius with perfect pitch who placed four high quality mics within the piano. Also in these sessions, although not on this track, I bowed this piano, and the results were gorgeous. I think the piano speaks for itself. I recorded this album while courting Anthony Braxton. It wasn't until I started playing in his large ensemble that he started to notice me, however, and he really only knows me as an electronic musician.
