I wrote this tune about the death of a good friend who was a roadie. He helped me carry my stuff, traveled untold thousands of miles with me, and became a close friend. I never had to wonder if anyone was watching my back when he was around.

Pop rock with a classic flavor
I made a living playing music all over the US and Canada, for several years. During that time, I had the opportunity to play with The Shirelles, The Coasters, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Lou Christie, The Platters, Danny and the Juniors, The 5th Dimension, and Gary US Bonds. While I was on the road, I also had the opportunity to hang out with Joey Molland (Badfinger), Foghat, Reba, Marvin Gaye, Tom T. Hall, Ray Sawyer (Dr. Hook), Three Dog Night, Jan and Dean, Joey Dee, Al Rappa (Bill Haley's Comets) and Rare Earth, along with hundreds of other nice people (and 7 jerks). I just can't remember all their names right now. Everything you hear (all the vocals and instruments) was played by me, and recorded on a beat up Fostex X-15 four track cassette recorder in a small apartment. They came out pretty well, considering what I had to work with. They're Good Housekeeping approved and everything! Everyone who hears them agrees: Way better than a kick in the pants!

Lyrics
A friend of mine told me the news today As time stood still, I stared at nothing Hoping to awake The words boiled up like rising tide Shapeless as a face from Picasso's notebook I just can't believe you're gone What started out as just a way To have a little fun Became a fight to the death But the bottle and the pills, they finally won La de da de da da da, de de de de dum As friends go you were second to none Held in the grip of foggy needs within Seduced by a bottle's embrace Until it lured you over the edge If the Devil loves a senseless waste He must be laughing now, I can hear the echoes Of the love you shared with all except yourself Well, Steve, this song's about you But really, it's for me 'Cause unlike you I have not been freed of Earthly need La de da de da da da, de de de de dum As friends go, you were second to none As friends go, you were second to none Lord knows I wish I never had to Write this song
