Summary: When you here about world war II you usually think of the Holocaust, or pearl harbor,
or the atomic bombs dropped on the japan cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While doing research of WWII
I came across this, The Ukraine Famine. In The 1930's, Joseph Stalin invented the 5 year plan which
was meant to severly increase the USSR agriculture by having a set amount of goods produced in a
period of 5 years. When farmers and others couldn't reach Stalin's high expectations, they were
arrested and/or killed. "Since the farmers, known for their independence, refused to join the
collective farms, Stalin decided to liquidate them as a class. The process of liquida- tion
reached a high point in the winter of 1929-1930 when hundreds of thousands were expropriated, dragged from their homes, packed into freight trains,
and shipped to the far north where they were dumped in the arctic, often without food or shelter.
By the beginning of the 1930s the totalitarian regime had seized more than 1 million Ukrainian peasants and deported more than
850,000 to the north, where many perished." the costs were counted in the millions of people who starved to death while the
Soviet government exported grain (18.1 million tons in 1932, 10 million tons
in 1933) in order to reach its political and industrial objectives. The 7 million
Ukrainians who starved to death did not matter to Stalin and his criminal
henchmen." says Proffesor Taras Hunczak at Rutgers University. This plan was the start of a huge famine which lead to over 10 million deaths,
this was also known as the holodomor. During this time, those who opposed stalin, and those who he felt
threatened by were arrested, exiled or shot. These were known as political Offenses and atleast 1
million were killed for commiting these crimes. For many years the holodomor was denied, Future
presidents, journalists and authors backed up the idea of the Famine never occuring. When the poor
hungry Ukraine peasents traveled to seek food, the Ussr government forced them back into the Ukraine.
Mentioning the famine was a crime, disobeyers would often spend 5 years in labor camps. Blaming
authoritys for the famine resulted in death. Millions had died, starved to death because of Joseph Stalin's actions,
yet people still tried to protected him and their county from the horrible truths of the Ukraine
Famine. In the late 1980's, more than 50 years later the truth about the holodomor was starting to
be denied less and less and finally in 2006,76 Years later a parliment was passed recognizing the
holodomor as an act of genocide and in just last year the Ukraine government made it illegal to deny
the events that took place during the Holocaustand the Holodomor yet some journalists and fringe
writers today still deny the horrible events thattook place in the year of 1932.
