Story behind the song
I did this because I like to. Story... We were dead in space - drifting because of a power surge that reeked havoc on the engine controls and no one on board was properly trained to fix it on the fly. Omega base Venus was our only chance. Omega base is a mining colony for Marillion VI.. It is mined and processed for cold fusion projects across the Universe. Marillion VI in it’s raw unprocessed state is very volatile and dangerously corrosive to human flesh - particularly the lungs. Marillion VI is mined under robotic control and processed by hand in sealed work spaces with arm access only. The air is evacuated after processing and the processed Marillion VI is delivered after sterilization. Marillion VI is one of only 6 chemical compounds known to provide adequate cold fusion energy when mixed with Sterealite under pressure and the cheapest over all. The power harnessed from a 3 inch rod can power a full Octailian Space Station for 8 weeks. 4 days on and 3 days off in 3 shifts it was run like a fire guard station back on Earth. The workers are given special drugs for concentration and high attention skills with a result of controlled stress. Unfortunately, the drugs are highly addicting and requires a detox program. It’s rumored that many ex-Marillion processors commit suicide after withdrawal. The company provides programs but they are purely voluntary. We quickly found that the stress of working under the conditions they did - the workers on Omega base knew how to party and blow off steam. We were lucky to be able to convince two of the robotic engineers to fix our engine console with the limited technical materials we carried on board and still had to wait for transmition of an upgrade before they would certify us for flight again. Our stay on Omega base was tense in the beginning and none of us was sure of what was truth and what was rumor about the dangers of Marillion VI but after we realized there was more danger in our fear we quickly felt the camaraderie of the workers and welcomed aboard. Still we were eager to get back under way and leave Venus, Omega base, and the Marillion mines behind us.
