Story behind the song
This haunting, bitter-sweet song won England's Beacon Radio song contest. It's spare to-the-bone lyrics and ravishing melody set it apart as something special. No-one outside a radius of 50 miles around the station has heard it, until now. It's about lost love that returns, but too late.
Lyrics
Reaching out to touch someone Taking time to know someone Finding out the lonely places Seeing through the smiling faces Turning round to find your way Living only for today Working out the ryhme and reason Running wild in the silly season Playing the game Making your name Shouting out loud Up to the clouds Keeping your head Loving in bed No more to be said Or is there My friend And when your life is full of tears A little bit crazy after all the years You've turned your back on yourself And walked away And finding out that she's the one Whose love returns when hope is gone Drift away Drift away Strange how some songs seem to haunt you Playing on your mind can daunt you Lost in time the music takes you Far away where no-one hates you Finding it out Sleeping about Calling your name Denying the blame Taking your lot It's all that you've got Playing your part Right from the start My friend And when your life is full of tears A little bit crazy after all the years You've turned your back on yourself And walked away And finding out that she's the one Whose love returns when hope is gone Drift away Drift away Drift away
