Artist picture
Singer/Songwriter in the tradition of classic country artists. A little humor and a whole lot of heart.
I've been writing songs since 1974. Over the past few years, I've participated in open mic's whenever possible and have become active in the Nashville Songwriters Association International ("NSAI").

Story behind the song
The title came to me and I knew I wanted to write this song. I was saving it for a co-writing session with a fantastic writer/friend but then one day the song just spilled out of me and wrote itself.
Lyrics
When I was young My daddy said, Son Come with me and learn Teach you how To build a treehouse Take this saw it's your turn Hold the board steady, Son Daddy I'm ready Gonna do just like you said Before you do, boy Get this through your head Measure twice cut once Take your time show a little patience Anything worth doing's worth doing right Always do the things you do with pride The measure of a man is what's inside Before you make that first cut Measure twice When I turned seventeen It was all about me Stubborn as the day is long Daddy wouldn't listen Came to blows in the kitchen And that same day I was gone Spent years looking for trouble Til a bar room scuffle Found me strapped to a gurney bed Cop and a doctor and an intern (the doctor said) (repeat chorus) Telephone rings 4 a.m. Mama's voice on the other end Daddy's gone and I'm going back home again Yeah I cleaned up my act Been resolute Five years sober but I still don't own a suit Tailor says he'll have one ready in an hour or two (and I can hear my Daddy saying) Measure twice .... copyright John Tolley All Rights Reserved
