Lyrics
Subject: I Love You
I used to love to hear the whippoorwill sing his hauntingly sweet song
But when I hear him now at night I can’t bear that lonely sound
I hope the girl who loved me so in that long short time ago
Is hearing those sweet notes we knew, is remembering and lonesome too
One night a hundred years ago at ten Central Standard time
Just the other side of Dothan close to the Georgia line
That summer night one year ago while someone sang that song
“Stars Fell On Alabama” that’s when you gave me back your wedding ring
Yes that starry sky in Alabama changed to a dark and stormy night
Black clouds all around me darkness shutting out the light
For with your ring you handed me something else as well
I didn’t recognize it right away but it was a taste of Hell
The path that I had chosen gave me what I’d earned in many ways
Those awful haunted nights and lonely wasted days
I had looked around, saw all those girls and like a child in a candy store
Forgot the cost, foolish me I wanted more
But from that dark and awful night such a long short time ago
Just the other side of Dothan when we heard that song on the radio
I knew I’d lost such a precious thing so I beg you dearest
Take back your ring. I’ll stay Online until the dawn
And pray that a reply will come saying, “Honey, come on home.”
