Story behind the song
This song is about my father's decision to leave the apparent safety of small town life to move to the big city of Toronto. The prospect of his 7 sons ending up working in the mine was more than he could bear.
Lyrics
© 2001 In loving memory of Lio and Theresa Refrain: Living Down on old Scagnetti’s farm Trying to make the best of country charm. To keep my family safe from city’s harm, We’re living down on old Scagnetti’s Farm. In the town of Garson where the INCO miners live, You’ll find a farm where farming is not done. Down the way the INCO mine has lots of jobs to give. That’s where I work from dawn to setting sun. Refrain: The farmhouse has no plumbing but the hydro seems to work. Three bedrooms, but no bath to clean my kids. The wood stove’s always burning and the coffee’s on to perk. Kiss the wife and then go do what INCO bids. Refrain: The family’s getting bigger, now I’ve got nine kids to feed. And this house is feeling smaller with each child. Working at the mine each day can make a body bleed, It would be nice to work this farm a while. ‘Cause the doctor says “Give up the mine, your lungs can’t take no more.” But there's nowhere else to work but that damn mine. And, do I want my sons to walk through INCO’s deadly door? Toronto’s looking better all the time. So we’re moving off of old Scagnetti’s farm. This old house has lost its country charm. To save my seven sons from INCO’s harm, I’ll move my family off Scagnetti’s farm. Moving off of old Scagnetti’s farm. There’s no point in living country charm. ‘Cause Toronto’s going to keep my sons from harm. So I’ll move my family off Scagnetti’s farm. Yes I’ll move my family off Scagnetti’s farm.
