Story behind the song
My aunt showed me a letter that my grandmother had written about why her and my grandfather moved from Alabama to Arkansas. That move changed our whole family tree quite dramatically.
It shows how what you do has an effect on other peoples lives.
Lyrics
They moved to Arkansas, a husband and his kids and wife.
He was running from the law, trying to make a better life.
But nothing changed, it stayed the same.
He came from Alabama with a banjo on his knee.
He thought he'd make it here, thought he finally would be free, but bridges burned and he learned.
You can change your location, but it won't change you.
You've got to change your situation and start anew.
He liked to drink and gamble and he stayed out late at night.
She'd always wait for him underneath the fron porch light.
When he'd come home, she'd never know.
But she was a patient woman, stuck with him through thick and thin.
She even waited for him when they took him to the pen.
When he returned, more bridges burned.
You can change your location, but it won't change you.
You've got to change your situation and start anew.
He'd had enough of the cotton feilds in the summer sun.
So he went back to the place where he'd first begun.
But when he left, some of his children stayed.
The started their own families, and they made their own way.
The years unfolded, he finally passed away.
She lived on for quite awhile, till there finally came a day when she left too, but the story's not through.
I wonder if they realized, they had started all these other lives when they moved to Arkansas.
You can change your location and it might change you.
If you change your situation, you might start something new.
