Story behind the song
When I was a teenager, and had just begun to write songs, I tried to write something similar to J.T.’s “Fire and Rain.” This piece evolved from that attempt to it’s present form in early 1999 after my best girlfriend and I, miles apart, were the ones chosen to find people dear to us dead, within three months of each other. I was seeking to customize the song to fit how we both felt. This final version will also most likely be used in my upcoming play… TBA
Lyrics

EACH AND EVERY DAY (MY FRIEND):

© 1982, 1999 by Lydia Glider-Shelley
Verse 1:
I look at your cold face, and I know it must be peaceful:
But it’s such a disgrace, the way you had to die.
How I wish you could come back to me!
You know I’ll always miss your laugh…
I thought you were happy, now I’m left wondering why:
Chorus:
My friend, I needed you, and you threw your life away!
My friend, I loved you, you know each and every day!
My friend, you gave me the love that held me on:
And I woke up one morning, and my friend you were gone.
Verse 2:
The preacher’s still a’ talkin’ now, but it’s all just empty air.
I miss your silly, stupid shit, and the fights that were never fair! But I know those days are over now, you’re so, so far away… I know that this is just the start of many sad and lonely days!
(repeat chorus)
Verse 3:
My friend, I’m back at home again: and your presence here is great! I can feel you in the room with me, ‘though I know it’s much too late… I’ve got to sort through all of your things, so full of memories… And folks who don’t know what to say treat me like I have a disease!
(repeat chorus)
tag: Oh yes, I woke up one morning, and my friend you were gone
