Story behind the song

I had this dream a few years back. It seemed so real. I bet if I met Willie in the future and we talked, he'd admit he had had the same dream. Some guys dream and end up with a civil rights career, and their widows get royalties from their speeches. I guess I will never be a civil rights leader with this kind of dream. It's the pain of being whitey.
