Story behind the song
Largely written in the Lee Street apartment of Jimmy Fox, it took all of about twenty minutes to write verses one and three. The middle verse was written later – a common practice of mine.
Lyrics
TAKE A LITTLE GINSENG: © 1998 by Lydia Glider-Shelley Verse 1: When I was just a little girl, and sick up in my bed… My granny used to come to me, and she always said: “ These doctors often just don’t seem to know what’s really wrong, so you’ve just got to treat the symptoms ‘til they’re gone.” She said: Chorus: “ Take a Little Ginseng, honey: St. John’s Wort if you’re feelin’ funny. . . Chamomile for your tummy, That’s how you take your herbs.” That’s how you take your herbs! Verse 2: So everywhere I go I take my granny’s love with me! It’s in the kitchen cupboard, there for anyone to see: Herbs for everything that ails the body, mind, or soul… And a picture of my granny, Standin’ by her mixing bowl. (repeat chorus) Verse 3: Now the years have come and gone, and with them many friends… But most of the advice I know dates to way back when The family would get together, trading recipes: And Granny always saved the best ones for me! She said: (repeat chorus twice) tag: That’s how you take your herbs
