One of the most anticipated titles for the Xbox 360 was not even a launch game. Dead or Alive 4 was pushed back until a month after the system was released, but it is arguably one of the best launch titles available. When playing Dead or Alive 4, it might be hard to notice some of the differences. But after you play it a bit, it becomes apparant that this is not the same DOA as the last game. The biggest major difference is the graphics. The arenas are vast and colorful. Whether you are noticing the shine of the neon lights in the Las Vegas stage or the color of the falling leaves, each stage simply looks beautiful. One slight downfall of the graphics would be the character models. While their clothes look all fancy and shiny, they all seem to bear a striking resemblance to a mannequin. The skin is just so smooth that they all look like Barbie & Ken. But one doesn't really have time to notice when they're getting pounded in the face with kicks, which will happen frequently and very quickly because the pace of the game seems to have taken a few steps up. Aside from the few tweaks to characters moves, Team Ninja deemed it necessary to redo the countering system. It is now harder than ever to counter moves with a noticably smaller countering window and completely different button combinations, though the reward for the effort is certainly great. Of course, one can only play against the AI for so long, and since Microsoft is all about online gaming, why not take Dead or Alive on Xbox Live? Playing online is just as silky smooth as playing a friend in Versus. There will always be that one person out there who unexplicably slows the game down with their lag, but for the most part the community supports good connection speeds and fair play. The game does have all new 3D lobbys for online players to hang around in, but they tend to not see that much action. To be considered in line to play you have to be watching the game in a full screen view, so they just seem to be a middle man to the games, which doesn't make much sense at all. But then again I suppose that there are people who just want to sit in a UFO as a panda bear wearing a hat chatting it up, so more power to ya. All-in-all, Dead or Alive 4 lives up to all of my expectations ... even the insanely annoying and cheap boss character. As far as 360 games go, this is quite possibly the quintessential game to get, but it's not perfect ... so it gets a 9 out of 10.
