Story behind the song
This ballad began life as a jolly Americana-esque lampoon, but somehow morphed into a deadly serious tragedy. It is a cautionary tale – don’t ask for something you don’t want, cos you might just get it! The tragedy is made all the more poignant by the fact that it is, essentially, true.
Lyrics
on the 29th of febry tradition says a lady may ask a man to marry her and not forgoe her dignity but if he refuses her to wed then-he-must buy her a silken gown and a set of pearls of that he can’t deny her dumdedum on the 29th of febry I was walkin with my darlin I asked him to marry me just as the day was dawning Well he turned a pale face to the wall He turned away in sorrow And as a tear began to fall he said ‘I wish you’d asked me tomorrow. For I am poor, I’m very poor And I can’t afford to but you A silken gown or a set of pearls. My love, I must deny you.’ Dum de dum On the 29th of febry I got round to thinking if I couldn’t wed the man I loved I’d get a gown all silken. So I went into the nearest bar And I sat down in the corner And every time that door did slam - I looked over my shoulder Until - in he walked, He was kinda short, but kinda dark and handsome And he looked like he could afford to pay my silken pearly ransom. So I went ahead and I stood me up And I sat right down beside him And I told him if he married me I never would deny him. Dumdedum x4 On the 29th of febry tradition says A lady May ask a man to marry her And not forgo her dignity. But if he agrees her to wed Then she must take him… never to forsake him.
