Story behind the song
Some students jump off of magdalen (maudlin) bridge each year in Oxford. It's rather a dumb thing to do for such (alledgely) bright young things. I stood on the bridge in the sunshine at a rather sad time of my life and despite the beauty of the place felt rather desolate - then this song turned up to meet me.
Lyrics
Verse 1 Confounded Dumbfounded My Conscience was impounded The sleeping dog let off the leash by the unworthy thought police The coin of conceit Falls through a hole in the silken purse I've made a pigs ear out of this life of mine alone Loveless Days on Magdalen Bridge Skies are grey and life's a bitch For love's a song, by a mocking bird -yeah and you wish it were the last sound that you ever heard In loveless days on Magdalen Bridge Verse2 I've always insisted, there's no such thing a certainty But I was so convicted, that you still loved me How Wrong can, you be now No more mistaken than before When My head got dragged around cos My heart wanted more than Chorus Bridge There's no saving the patient When we all can die in haste Fill in the blank generation with wallpaper paste Feathered with the same brush Lose your human race Put the cat amongst the pigeons Say that Nothing ever goes to Waste in the Chorus (C) 1992 Jonathan Delaney
