"Help Is on the Way" is a satirical song about the botched government response to Hurricane Katrina. It is shamelessly partisan and in a style reminiscent of the sixties.

Lyrics
Help Is on the Way 1. Air Force One was overhead but they could not see us We were prisoners of the flood who was going to free us? Washington must not have any TV stations No one knew our suffering except the entire nation. Chorus: “Help is on the way, help is on the way” That’s what FEMA said while folks were dropping dead “You’re gonna be OK, it’s coming any day There’s just a slight delay, help is on the way.” 2. To save us from the rising tide they gathered all their forces Then they sent in the cavalry on three Arabian horses. They made us wait five long days before they came to pluck us They’ll pay their friends to rebuild but I’ll bet you they will forget us Chorus: “Help is on the way, help is on the way” That’s what FEMA said while folks were dropping dead “You’re gonna be OK, it’s coming any day It should be there by May, help is on the way.” 3. The President now admits the response was slightly tardy But he was busy somewhere else leading his Grand Old party. That helps the oil companies, that helps out Halliburton That helps the ones that don’t need help and steals from them that’s hurtin’. Chorus: “Help is on the way, help is on the way” That’s what FEMA said while folks were dropping dead “You’re gonna be OK, it’s coming any day But it wouldn’t hurt to pray, that help is on the way.” 4. Now we’re no longer on TV, but still we have our voices And as long as there’s democracy we get to make some choices. So if you’re tired of all their lies, here’s the honest truth Next November you’ll find help inside your voting booth. Last chorus: Help is on the way, help is on the way When we get to have our say we’ll make them suckers pay We’re gonna be OK come next election day We’ll shout “Hip hip hooray, help is on the way!” Repeat chorus © 2005 Paul Kaplan Music ASCAP
