Story behind the song
Part of the rock opera Leonardo The Absolute Man(based on the life of Leonardo DaVinci written by Trent Gardner of Magellan. Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 at Vinci. His status as the illegitimate son of Ser Piero made childhood a difficult experience. He was permitted little contact with his peasant mother, Caterina. At the time, such stigma made 'normal' opportunities of education and commerce impossible. With little interest shown from his father, Leonardo was left to his own devices to make a life for himself. Ser Piero did assist him to Florence, where he became apprentice to master artist, Verrocchio. However, Leonardo's gifts would soon reverse the role of student and teacher. By 1472 Leonardo da Vinci belonged to the painter's guild of Florence. Leonardo possessed an undeniable spirit and hungered for unlimited knowledge. A master in painting, sculpture, mechanics, mathematics, anatomy, optics, science, music, poetry, architecture, writing and inventions, just to name a few, only enhanced his unique 'universal spirit' ...which was his very essence. Leonardo died at Cloux on May 2, 1519. His dear friend Francesco Melzi was heir to his estate.
Lyrics
First Commission Calco: Portrait of a mystery She holds her pose for all to see Deep within there was no sin A gift to last for centuries Caterina: She wore no crown of jewels to give a touch or say a word It's the pain she knew that made her human Calco: Now thirty years have come and gone He has this work to call his own Caterina: In dreams, nothing flows faster than the years Calco: But Mary speaks... and calls him home Caterina: "How little time it takes to understand our fellow man... Calco: How little time it takes to be a human" Calco & Caterina: I understand Now I can see her clearly....... Calco: No call to arms will sound today These great empires will praise her sight A wisdom finds this place and time My Il Divino's gift.... `divine'. Caterina: She wore no crown of jewels to give a touch or say a word It's the pain she knew that made her human Calco: I understand. "How little time it takes to understand our fellow man... Caterina: How little time it takes to be a human" Calco & Caterina: How little time it takes when we forgive we learn to live It's the love that it takes Calco: to be a human.... Caterina: It's the love that makes us.
